FAQs - About the Course
-
The Summer School is for young singers entering Year 9 through to Year 13 who enjoy singing and want to develop their choral skills. You might already sing in a choir, have singing lessons or simply be looking for a new musical challenge.
-
The course fee is £550 per participant. An early booking rate of £495 is available for those who are offered a place and secure it by 31 January 2027.
-
Previous choral experience is desirable. The week will move at a good pace, so participants should be comfortable singing as part of a choir and ready to engage with challenging repertoire. Above all, we are looking for enthusiastic young singers who are keen to develop and contribute fully to the week.
-
A good level of music-reading ability is expected. You don’t need to be a perfect sight-reader, but you should be comfortable following a choral score and prepared to familiarise yourself with the music in advance.
-
Each Summer School explores a carefully curated programme of outstanding choral repertoire. The music will be challenging, varied and rewarding, giving young singers the opportunity to develop their technique, ensemble skills and musicianship.
-
We ask everyone to submit a short singing recording as part of their application. This isn’t a formal audition, and there is no need for professional recording equipment or a piano accompaniment. It simply allows us to hear your voice and ensure that the Summer School will be a good musical fit for you.
-
Applications are considered on a rolling basis, so we recommend applying early. The final application deadline is Friday 28 May 2027, subject to availability. Places are limited and may be filled before the application deadline.
-
The week combines full choral rehearsals, sectional coaching and performance opportunities. You will also take part in Broadside Activities and spend time connecting with fellow singers. Participants will work towards Choral Evensong, the Summer School Recital and a final public concert.
-
Choral Evensong is a peaceful church service in which much of the music is sung by the choir, from psalms and canticles to anthems. It brings together centuries of tradition with some of the finest choral repertoire and welcomes people of all faiths or none.
For those considering choral scholarships at university, it also offers valuable experience of the repertoire and style of singing found in college and university choirs.
-
Broadside Activities offer time away from rehearsals to relax, connect and try something different, with wellbeing, creativity and the Norfolk countryside at their heart.
