2. Safer Working & Staff Code of Conduct
Everyone working on the Broadside Music Youth Summer School has a responsibility to create a safe, professional and supportive environment for young people.
Our team includes experienced music teachers and professional musicians. All adults working on the course are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
-
Broadside Music is committed to safer recruitment. Appropriate identity, reference and Disclosure and Barring Service checks will be undertaken according to each person's role and current legal requirements.
Before the Summer School, staff will receive safeguarding information and induction and will be expected to understand:
who the DSL and Deputy DSL are;
how to recognise and report a safeguarding concern;
what to do if a young person makes a disclosure;
the arrangements for residential and off-site supervision;
the standards of professional conduct expected throughout the course.
-
We want the Summer School to feel warm, friendly and relaxed, while maintaining clear boundaries between adults and young people.
Staff are expected to:
treat participants fairly and respectfully;
avoid favouritism or inappropriate familiarity;
use appropriate language;
respect participants' privacy and personal space;
maintain appropriate boundaries in residential accommodation;
behave consistently as adults in a position of trust.
Adults will not share bedrooms with participants. Staff should not enter a participant's bedroom alone unless there is a genuine welfare or safety reason and, wherever practicable, another member of staff should be present or aware.
-
Unnecessary situations in which an adult is alone and unobserved with a participant will be avoided.
Where individual musical tuition, pastoral support or another one-to-one conversation is appropriate, it should wherever possible take place somewhere observable or accessible, with another member of staff aware that it is happening.
Some physical contact may occasionally be appropriate in music teaching, first aid, reassurance or to ensure someone's immediate safety. Any contact must be appropriate, necessary and sensitive to the young person's wishes and circumstances.
-
Staff must maintain the same professional boundaries online as they would in person.
Personal social media accounts should not be used to establish private connections with participants, and staff should not engage in inappropriate private messaging with young people.
Course communication with participants will take place through agreed Broadside Music channels and involve parents or carers where appropriate.
Staff will support the Summer School's phone-free arrangements, including the secure collection, storage and supervised access of participants' phones in accordance with the agreed course procedures.
Photography, audio and video of participants will only be taken in accordance with Broadside Music's agreed arrangements and the permissions provided by participants and their parents or carers.
-
Staff must not provide alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, illegal drugs or other prohibited substances to participants.
At all times, sufficient members of the residential team will remain fully able to supervise participants and respond to an incident or emergency.
Staff are expected to report concerns about participants, other adults, professional boundaries or unsafe working practices. No member of staff should feel unable to raise a genuine concern because it relates to a colleague, friend or senior member of the course team.
Serious breaches of these expectations may result in an adult being removed from duties and, where appropriate, referred to the relevant safeguarding authority.
